George Stavropoulos was born in Greece and studied dress design in Paris. He had a well-known custom salon in Athens from 1949-1960. He married Greek-American and came to New York in 1961, where he opened a house on 57th street. Stavropoulos is known for draped and tiered evening gowns, asymmetrical folds, wrapped coats, kimono sleeves, floating panels, capes, bias jerseys. Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson was among his distinguished clients.
This smashing gown is so quintessentially Stavropoulos. Just so graceful and truly a work of art! Creamy silk floral one shouldered bias gown overshot with fine gold threads. Deep cut "V" back is weighted to insure that the dress falls into place properly. Rear nylon zipper at the waist. Attached flowing cape from the shoulder hangs gracefully down the back. Single string across the back snaps at the right underarm and keeps everything in place. The gown is fully lined in cream silk crepe. "Stavropoulos, New York. Athens" label. In overall good condition. Some discoloration in the lining at the underarms. Some slight fraying at the shoulder where the scarf meets the dress.
Bust: 33" Waist & Hips: Due to the construction of the gown, these measurements are free (best for about 26" waist 34-36" hips. Length: 55" from shoulder to hem.
